I had a hard time trying to make the G1 work with Etisalat’s network. After several attempts to make it work, I finally got the right combination of settings. Here is the setup:
2 APN should be created: (Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> (MENU) New)
Etisalat:
Name: Etisalat
APN: etisalat.ae
APN type: Default
mms:
Name: mms
APN: mms
username: mms
password: mms
MMSC: http://mms/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: 10.12.0.30
MMS Port: 8080
APN type: mms
This should get both 3G and MMS working. It will allow you to send and recieve MMS.

I want to use my home and office wifi network and don’t want to use the 3g and MMS feature since i haven’t subscribed to it. Do i still need to set up the APN? Can you guide me…

You do not need to set up an APN if you are only planning to use it through wifi. Under the main menu click on Setting -> Wireless controls -> Turn on Wi-Fi then click on Wi-Fi Settings. It should list your Wifi network there, click on it to set it up.

still can’t get mine to work, even with these settings. any other ideas?

@ asem: Usually the G1 will try to access the GSM network to activate your account. There is a couple of things you can do: First, in newer versions of Android, you can skip the sign-in and get to the home of the phone, where you can connect to a wireless network and then sign-in to your gmail account. The second option is to define the access point before you click on sign-in by pressing the menu button and defining the internet access point. Please note that the settings I’ve provided where for a post-paid card.

@ tahira: Are you using a post or pre paid sim card?

The settings should work without a problem. What version of Android are you using?

You can try the settings I’ve mentioned here. I didn’t try it with a prepaid number so I cannot tell you for sure that it works. Let me know if it does. It is a fairly easy setup.
